hey, now did you know that Paul?
Except it's more like 10 months of preliminary conceptual dreaming, six weeks of designing and 2 weeks of frantic building....

Well, my car got back about a week ago, and I was finally able to look at it, and admire all the weight that got added to keep it in the slot! (just weighed it - 28 g - an ounce!)
Here it is in all its glory:
As I mentioned earlier, this was pretty much as found. I ran it in informal drag races about 10 years ago in Bordo, where it was running about 1.7 on a more "rustic" dragstrip, so seems to have improved by about .2. For this race, I cleaned it up and replaced some of the chassis screws, but didn't do too much to the motor, which still seemed to be working well. Looking at that bare screw holding the front chassis, I had briefly thought about putting on a nose weight, as was done at the time... but didn't, unfortunately as things turned out.
What's interesting about this chassis is that it's a "magwinder" setup, in which the side rails replace the motor's endplates, thus eliminating all that weight... I also find it very funny, and I have a few chassis like this, in that the magwinder is a fairly sophisticated setup, requiring precision alignment - but the builder uses a fairly rudimentary drop arm, in fact a commercial unit in this case.
Wayne, thanks again for getting my car to run on the strip without popping out. I noticed the tires have some goop on them - was this just in the shutdown area? I seem to remember that was the procedure...
Looking forward to next year!

Love the magwinder setup , can really see how it's done with the underneath shot .
With all that power from that rewound motor maybe put it in a heavier or longer car ? Could possibly use all of the torque and win lowest ET

Don,
Happy to hear your car got home safe (and heavy). It's a very cool and powerful machine!
The race was a 'No Glue' event and all that mess is from the shutdown area. Tires were cleaned on cardboard 'un-glue boards' but came home 'gluey' after their last pass.
The Ghost Valiant ran on the front tires (in the shutdown area...lol) and wow... what a sloppy mess wound up on them.
Hooked on padlocks...
I better get busy ... only 10 1/2 months of pro-crastination left to go.

Don. good looking car (Fiat). Question: how are the front wheels mounted to the front axle?
Does the moon caps come off the rim? A friend has a set of them and is trying to
figure how they mount.
Thanks

Hi DVan,
This was a pretty common setup at the time, and a number of manufacturers made these.
The wheel is one solid unit with a recess for the ball bearings which are separate and pressed in. A plain axle is used and it is placed into the ball bearing and held on with a bit of loctite or superglue.

Don thanks for your reply, now let me make sure I got this right.
A 1/8th axle is inside the brass tubing and the wheels are either Locite or superglued to the 1/8th axle.

Almost - it's actually a brass axle that came with these wheels, and the ends are superglued inside the ball bearings in the wheels...

Notice that the prices of vintage drag parts are pretty strong on ebay?

Nice one Bob - I seem to have missed that! Definitely looks like a scratchbuilt to me, but pictures are rather fuzzy!
I don't think anybody made an inline chassis for the big padlocks, except Kemtron for their own X503, will have to check if they did one for the DC85 too, but this doesn't look like a Kemtron, and that front looks scratched.

This was a great event put on by Gator Bob!
The drag racers at Eddie's Slot Car World in NorCal became inspired by Bob's event and are going to host a vintage Drag Proxy Event.
Here's a link:

Thanks for the inspiration Gator Bob!
Hope you guys will join in the fun!
