Found a nice little motor for one of my cars for next year Bob
Now whether to leave the nice little 6 volt arm in there or whack in another new RAM/Kemtron 7 pole 3V beast .. Mmmm factory fresh just decades old ...
Oh what car to make for this mill .

I just sent a NOS RAM 6V arm to Rodney to try in his rail. I polished the comm a bit and it measured only .3 ohms
As Bob Braverman often said, "That should really haul the beans!"

Good to know ! Thanks Rick May just add some BB's to it and leave it alone

Not sure if they are all the same but on my RAM 850 the darn bearings were only 7/32" X 1/8" not the common 1/4" OD. I had to bore out the end plates.

You're right Rick, 7/32 outer diam bushing just like the Pittman DC85 that Don sent me . Needed to be bored out to accept the common 1/4" OD BB's .

NICE!
Darn,... I might have been bidding against you Paul if that's the 850 that was on ebay early in the week.
I still have never had one of these 'Master' Locks .... lol

Hopefully I can get my act together and come up with some entries, Both DC85s and maybe some DC65s ! and other padlock style motors/cars. Going to try and pull together a "team" from this area, I got the cars, hardware and parts but tech skills limited. We will be hailing from East Texas and maybe go by the name "Pine wood Racers"

Paul E.
You got a great motor ... I 'should' have bid more ... LOL
Paul B.,
Although I'm not from Texas I'll help or do a team car with you.
You have a Kemtron chassis IIRC. Those are fairly 'easy' to build up.
Gather your parts, pick a body style and please join us for the 2nd annual "Rods and Rail" event coming up in May 2015.

2nd Annual "Rods and Rails" ideas:
Open frame plate motor class.
Modern wheels and tires.

Well, I realize we aren't voting, but.....
The Russkit repops and so forth are fine, but I'd hate to see any of the modern drag stuff (wheels or tires) on these cars. They just don't look right on vintage cars, just my opinion. They are great on the new cars, but I think they might provide a significant advantage. Where does it stop?? Neos, spring steel chassis,???
I really like the open frame class idea. In the back of my mind, I'd still like to see a merged, single set of rules so that we can run the same cars in East and West Coast races. We are not that far apart right now, maybe it can be done if enough people get behind it.
Just my .02

I'm very much against modern wheels as well - a little harder to tell about the tires, because 40 year old tires don't always work so good! They seemed to be okay for the padlock drag proxy, and we'll see how those old Graupners and VCs work for the R&C proxy.
An open motor event would be nice, and tailor-made for DC65X!

I think the 65x is in regardless...I'm not sure if the open frames need to be a separate class or if we could just expand the rules to include them, like the West Coast rules do. The biggest sticking points might be the vac-form bodies and rolling front wheels. Personally, I think the bodies should be OK, and the front wheels off the track and out of the goo.

Well, the "sports cars" can be foreign, and a lot of foreign cars are sporty.....what are you up to???
Posted 16 July 2014 - 02:14 PM
Posted 16 July 2014 - 04:51 PM
Well, "Altereds" can also be foreign and many were...Anglias, Thames trucks, Austins, Fiats, Bantams etc.
Posted 16 July 2014 - 06:00 PM
Ah yes remember all those being Altereds & that clears up a few body options I've been looking at using. Got stuck on the whole American production car wording of the other class descriptions Clears up my confusion!
One question about the VW Bug , as the real Inch Pincher was in the Gas class, would the model VeeDub just move into the "Altered" class under the West Coast rules?

Question: to the racers that ran these car from Fla., when you guys ran these cars, what modifications did you have to make so the cars could launch without jumping out of the grooves or de-slot?
We seem to have problems with most vintage cars of the day that want to deslot. They seem to have a hard lauch for some reason.

I didn't make any modifications, the chassis was literally the one I built for the Florida event No practice & no prior Dragster building experience whether modern or vintage.
However I managed it the Beetle just got up & went off the line
As for others & mods , I know they had to add a lot of lead to the front of Don's Fiat altered with mag sidewinder chassis & hot rewound RAM motor. It was hard launching & popped right out of the slot!!
here's the link to page 8 of this thread and a little down the page is the video of some of the cars launching off the line .
The 3 K&B rail clones of Davids from what I saw & heard didn't have any deslotting/hard launching issues and they're based off original designs with the motors & vintage tires.

That's up to Dvan and the rules guys, but it seems logical enough.

There might be a few reasons. I only know about my cars, but generally I think that the cars in Florida:
1. Had fairly hard vintage tires or urethanes I think
2. Had most front end weight resting on guide at start not on front wheels
3. Weight was added if needed
4. Cars had weighted drop arms in many cases
I know I tested mine at MoTown on 16v, so I knew they would most likely go down the track unless there was too much glue. The Florida guys evidently did a great job of track cleaning and removing the shutdown glue or we would have all had problems. A little wheelspin is your friend! Perhaps gearing differently might help as well, hard to say.
