So far I think everything is quite reasonable. I also don't have an issue with a spec guide, especially if the races go smoother as a result. Whatever you decide to do as far as tires and/or wheels is fine by me. The modern drag donuts on vintage wheels may be an acceptable compromise??

I'd still like to see a common rule set for East/West but that might be too much to ask. The main things that I think we need to rule out are neos or cobalts and any type of wheelie bars. The West coast guys seem to be committed to hard bodies, but they have some good classes.

I'm in with a cash prize for a .999 in a full 1/4 mile on 16 volts. So far, I have gotten a 1.21 at 49 something mph here in Modesto but I couldn't back it up over in Vallejo. That would be a hell of a mark to shoot for.

In the end, you are the boss, Bob, so just let us know what you want!!

If the spec guide helps out Bill & the raceway then go for it , otherwise any guide, modern or vintage that's black/dark grey? The Cox quick change worked fine on the Bug , from what I could tell :)

The all against all Rods V Rails worked great last time, but maybe with a much larger field for next time you may need to split it into classes? Or would all against all still work ? Would  be interesting to see so many Rails against all the Rods :D

If you introduce classes Bob, maybe for the clinically insane  an unlimited class ?  For neo's, cobalts and anything else you could strap on/in these awesome Padlock beasts :dance3:

That cash prize would be cool , be intriguing to ring all the power out with standard mags etc and reach .999 :sun_bespectacled:

As David said , you are the boss , what do you think?

Paul

So now looking at some modern replacement parts for these little cars is like adding modern radial tires, shocks and brake pads to a restored 'stock original' 1969 Camaro.

'I'm Good with that'

The issue with the spec guide is lots of older chassis' and drop arms are 1/8th and/narrow to the point where you can't drill them to accept the bigger post.

With that said:

I'll add a 'Most Original" or period correct award. :D

Regarding classes,

"The Rods and Rails" basic founding concept is one of a mid 60s period limited "Run what you brung" Proxy race.

Coast to Coast - I will keep it wide open, the cars that ran in the V-Town event look legal and hardbody cars that meet the age restriction are welcome as they were last year.

As far as rule changes:

  • Vintage or Modern guide flags are allowed with limitations to blade length, depth and opacity/color. Will specify.
  • Vintage open frame motors will be allowed. A list will be compiled including, DC196, RP77, MK-70, AT406 ... etc.
  • Any rear wheels and tires..... vintage, reproduction or modern.

If there are enough entries to have a full body 'Stock' spec class run-off these will be hardbody cars only.

Sounds good to me Bob , like how you put it about putting modern radials and brakes on a stock Camaro :)

Now I can get some cool looking Centerline drag wheels :D

Probably plain unless you can get anodizing cheap for a short run of 2 pairs of wheels :laugh2:

Some of us lean toward oxidized over anodized! But I do like some of the new wheels. Technology is great stuff!!

Those ProTrack wheels come in colors.

For this race it's still <1967 time warp front wheels or exact repops.

Builders can chose to mix and match wheels or put new rubber on vintage wheels.

The new Halibrand wheels are kinda retro if the white letters are removed.

I'm okay with the rules you have Bob. If they help the program run smoother than all the better. I like the idea of classes, makes for a more interesting mix and pairing. I thought the selection of classes at V Town was great; the only thing I'd like to see is a separate class for rails and comp.coupes. Just saying.

.999 on 16 volts will be a record accomplishment for sure. Back in the days those guys put down some impressive numbers, but they also had 32 insulation burning Volts!!! We don't have that advantage today, what we do have are powerful magnets to compensate for the lower voltage. Awhile back Paul and I briefly discussed how cool it would be to have an unlimited dragster class.

Don't get me wrong...I do agree with what Dave said about neo's and wheeliebars, they don't belong in the vintage classes. A separate unlimited dragster class just might be very challenging and a whole lot of fun. Forget the cash award that should be for pure vintage only. This is just for fun and excitement!

Rails, Magwinders or any other dragster configuration you can dream up with a padlock motor, 7 pole arm and your choice of magnets.

Best of all NO Wheeliebars!!!!!!!!!

Agreed ...

I will create a sign up sheet and the entrants pick the class or classes they want to run.

The  .999 or better will be a scale 1000ft @ 14.7 volts for "Rods and Rails" legal cars only.

I encourage entrants to build and submit exhibition cars for these two classes:

  1. 'Unlimited' cars using motors from the list, neo magnets, wheelie bars, parachute, multi motors .... etc.
  2. 'Wheelstander' cars can be Padlock, Open frame or Mabuchi 36D powered, wheeliebars allowed.

Also - I will be making an adjustment to the 'width' rule.

I've got one for the wheelstander class...100% vintage hardbody except guide.  The halloween 36D motor has a NOS vintage arm in it too, 75t 26w. :shok:

Liking the exhibition classes Bob :D

Will have to grab some neo's for a stab at an "Unlimited" car :dance3:    Sounds like a whole lotta fun !

Does anyone know where to get neo magnets that are a direct fit for padlocks? :unknw:

Funny you should ask that Bob, was wondering the same thing!

I know I've seen some people use the flat rectangular Neos and stack em up to make the cube. Looking at some neo suppliers for cube magnets near the size .

As yet I haven't found direct slot in sized neos... The hunt continues!

Wonder if the 1/32 plastic car traction magnets (flat rectangular) would fit??

Folks, tire hookup will be the key - this is a 1000' scale track.  If you're an experienced slot drag racer, you know that staging the car and traction mean everything.

That is, if you can get a good light...

Bob - pro tree for unlimited?

ProTree ? :shok:

David,

The race will be on (or about) Monday May 18th 2015. This time and date must be cleared by the track owner Bill.

Local racers had a bunch of fun and laughs .... for a Monday night :sarcastic_hand:

Paul,

Please post if you find magnets that fit. Thanks.

Gator Bob, are you going to put all these rules and new rules on one post? So I can get a copy to share with the locals in case we send in cars.

 Thx

Here is the set up in my RussKit dragster so you can see how they fit. Neo's are 1/2" square 1/8" thick. If you can find a 1/2" or 5/8" cube it would probably work. In a stock motor housing you may need to center (L to R) the 1/2" stack or cube by shimming a 1/16" on each side. No need to glue them in place....they won't go anywhere!!!

Sources I've used are Super Magnet Man and Emovendo, also look on Amazon or do a search, many sources available.

If you've never worked with neos be cautious handling them, they are extremely powerful and will grab any ferrous metal within a square mile....just kidding, but they are strong. Don't try cutting or grinding them, the heat will diminish their strength. Avoid them from slapping together, they can crack or chip.

You'll be surprised at how responsive a padlock motor becomes with neos......they love it!!!!

Awesome shot & car Bill :good:    :D

One thing I've noticed with the neos is that the position of N & S poles varies & you have to *read* the description :laugh2: Some it's through the *thickness* others are magnetized through the magnets *length*

With the original mags/poles do the go left /right or up & down?  Does it make a difference?

Was just gonna post this picture by NZMark I found over at Bracket500

RAM Neo.jpg

The sizes you mentioned I've found on various sites including the 1/2" square  1/8" thick also a 5/8" cube. measuring the standard RAM magnet opening is 5/8" between the laminations and 5/8" between end plates.

1/2" square 1/8" thick gold plated N52 neo magnet

5/8" cube neo nickel plated

:laugh2: If it don't go chrome it :D

Will have to look for some junk dc85 & RAM motors, even just the lams & end plates for an unlimited project :D Every motor I've got is already lined up for a regular vintage class build.

Will you be tuning the Valiant & re entering it next time Bob?
