I remember weight was the answer for de-slotting...Gator Bob also taped a couple drop arms in addition to the lead.

We cleaned the track except for the shutdown glue.  Smart racers only slightly cleaned the shutdown glue off the tires after a run, and then rolled out 3 times what was left on them for the next pass (me).  I kept to myself pretty much and tried to focus on bracket racing cause it was my first time meeting Bob (man he knows a lot about these toy cars!).  What surprised me the most was if we staged the vintage cars exactly the same way each time, they would pretty much hit their numbers.

Spinning off the line is not good for hitting the bracket time, spinning bad for low ET, wheelstands are kool, but also not good for drag times.  Weight in front of car can be offset by adding wheelie bars if low ET is what you're looking for.

I plan to join in on the next Rods and Rails at The Raceway - scrounged some parts from the Orange City private track where we run vintage stuff weekly. This one is not a kit hahahahahaha, funkymobile needs a lot of help!  I'm scared to think how this thing will behave fitting everything into a drag car, I know, I know, the motor is positioned wrong in the picture...yikes!

not sure on fronts yet

Can we use modern guide flags???

Charlie, That is a great selection of components for your starting point.

Line up the motor screw holes, get your rail width and spacers sized up ..... go with the big five spoke cast fronts ... nice.

I will be finalizing a few spec changes for the 2nd annual...

Please speak up with any rule changes you would like to see implemented for the next "Rods and Rails"

Thanks...

Should make into a seriously K00L Dragster Charlie :D

Definitely go with the 5 spoke fronts as Bob says :good: they look great!

Will stay posted for the updates Bob. As for rules overall, the ones you implemented worked great for the event.

Guide flag looks good.  The vintage wires I have are too short - ideas please?

Stretch them! (Sorry Charlie, I couldn't resist.) :)  Look for some Marklin train wire. It comes in several colors, is a small diameter, & looks vintage. I've gotten some on ebay, but I think the father & son selling it also have a train shop in NC.

Bob, I think everything went very well, but I'd like to see a little more slack on modern rubber and guide flags. Not necessarily wheels, but maybe tires?? Your call, just a suggestion.

Charlie ...

Rules updates will be posted

Hang loose on the lead wires... before you go out and spend all that money on a cable stretcher tool kit.  :dash2:  :laugh2:

Hi Bob,

:excl:  All suggestions will be considered.

I'm not sure if these were allowed in your first event so I thought I would ask. They are Paul's of Canada urethane reproductions of 1960's vintage tires. The one below is a K&B reproduction:

CarNumber4-111.jpg

I used the Cox Firestone reproductions on my RAM 850 King Cobra dragster. These tires hook up perfect on a clean modern strip and they really look the part being vintage repops of period tires.

Here's a link to check them out:

Hi Rick , last race it was purely vintage sponge, rubber, silicones etc :good:

agree with the general concensus allowing modern boots and the guide flags as I'm all out of vintage guidance systems :laugh2:

Agree with the modern urethane tires.... don't agree with the modern guide flags! They're almost worse than the pink Parma inline gears....

Vintage guide flags are cheap and common; and if anybody really can't find one, will be glad to donate!

Good vintage leads not so easy to find, but as pointed out elsewhere, the Marklin train wire makes a very close Cox copy....

Well.........in a vintage event it's nice to see vintage parts used. Of course, this is Bob's show and he makes the calls.

But, the old guide flags for drag cars are cheap and not hard to find. And like Don said, if I can't point someone toward where to buy one, I'll donate one.

Any particular ones that are drag specific? Only seen a couple of the K&B drag ones online. All I've used for vintage guides on the drags are messy old Cox quick change ones, which I've now run out of .

Was looking at those very ones Rick :good:

I've been told that white or colored guides do not trip the track sensors as reliably as black ones. Just as we did with the pink gears in another proxy race, let's just dye everything black and call it good. Same with lead wire; as I remember it, we threw that skinny junk away and used any old lamp cord we could find. JMO.

I'm running a white Russkit guide and skinny Marklin train wire with a 3V RAM 850. No problems on Eddie's strip:

Here, how about these. They look like they could be a copy of the Cox guide and they're not white:

What kind of times are we supposed to beat in the 1/4?  (The Raceway is a 1000' scale dragstrip, hint!)

IMO - Tire hookup will get the fastest ET as long as the car is fast.  Page 8 says 34 mph?

How fast is a Kemtron Mustang HEAVY brick padlock motor?  I'm trying to build chassis light, gears and tires are gonna be key?  Testing allowed?

I should probably just be a proxy driver, fell out of drags because sometimes I'm too competitive.  Bob will keep me cool, he is kinda strong willed.

I'm gonna get to touch all these cars...can't wait!!!  (man DC, that thing looks awesome)

The Mustang is actually lighter than the standard RAM 850's & Pittman dc85's Charlie. The Mustang has a smaller magnet and much thinner laminations than those mentioned .

Just depends on what armature your motor has and your gear ratio/tires etc.

They are a fun group. It will be fun.

Not all stressed out like some other leagues.

Yup the vintage and the modern ones too. ... LOL

It's going to work out real good.

The vintage cars will run first against each outer heads up, that will set the cars dial in then they will also Bracket race in with the modern cars all with no glue.

Your car may win heads-up there or get beat but... later the slower vintage cars have the advantage over the modern because they will probably be leaving first based on the dial in. The old heavyweight cars like no glue, the modern cars don't like to run without the stick stuff.

I will be amused if Don's Fiat beats George's slip joint dragster .. but I will not be surprised.

Example -

A 1.2 second vintage rail would get a .6 second head start up against a .6 second S16D modern rail.

My 1.8 second (just a guess) Valiant would get a 1 second head start against a .8 second Gr-20 powered 63 Impala Hardbody.

HaHa... see if you can catch me.

That is like leaving a day and a half before ... forcing the modern drivers to get over anxious and 'red light' :sarcastic_hand:

At the end of the night the time slips will tell which vintage car had the fastest MPH and the Lowest ET. So it's like two races in one. We all get time slips for every round. Hey ... if a good 'light leaver' driver runs a vintage car it could beat all the modern cars .... :wacko2:  :shok:

This will be fun.. it won't be boring even though there will be more modern cars.

These guys and gals want to win rounds and don't care about fast new or old'n slow cars.

They are all going to want to get the chance run the vintage cars :D

Guaran-dam-teed !

Hmmm, the vintage cars won the bracket race.

Thinking :umnik2:

it is time to get straight with the rules for the next 'Big Go' ...   :dance4:

  • ?- Modern rears..... they come 'trued'.

  • ?- Guide flags will have to be truly opaque and a minimum depth for the optical timer pick-ups, This was an on track issue and my flags needed to have tape added to the blade. Track owner prefers 'everyone' uses Parma Graphite but I don't think we want a spec guide.

  • ?- Classes?  How many?  :search:

How about a cash bonus to the first one to run a .999 or under?
