I've had 3 requests for the allowance of modern front wheels.

Open for comment on a rule change from those that are interested in participating.

BTW: Here is a great wheel history and pictorial reference link.

Not sure I see the point, since vintage front wheels are relatively easy to find...

Modern tires make sense, guides less, but what the heck, but front wheels?

Hi Bob,

Eventually, I'm sure you'll have requests to allow modern everything! :laugh2: Modern racers care about the racing, not necessarily the cars themselves. Modern parts makes the "racing" easier.

Vintage geeks (like me  ) like the old cars themselves, not just the racing, and don't mind digging around to find parts.

Good luck Bob! :victory:

Count me as one of those modern front wheel requesters :to_take_umbrage:

Time for the vintage police to come take me away   Handcuffs.jpg    :laugh2:

The only reason why I asked Bob about the modern wheel thing is that a real dragster I'm trying to replicate as best I can had the old style bicycle front wheels, plus on occasion the magnesium 12 spoked spindle mounted rims.

Here's the car I'm currently attempting to follow closely.

fiat fronts.jpg

Here it is again with the other style of front rims it ran with on occasion.:

Spoked Wheels.jpg

No wheel in my "vintage" collection is anything like the cycle fronts or the mag spindle mount ones, leaving me either to run with vintage ones I have got

like the Mila Miglia magnesium wheels ( which I love don't get me wrong )  they just don't look anything like the real car ones.

I could purchase other vintage rims , like these Ulrich Halibrand ones which I love the look of , but aren't right for the car either.

vintage rims.jpg

Or ask about modern fronts that look fairly close to the spindle mount mag wheels ( I asked specifically about the use of these ones)

bare metal 10 spoke.JPG

When ROAR used the same modern JDS 1/16 axle rims on his amazing front motor'd  "Pure Hell" recreation  I thought they looked great then, and thought they would work on the Fiat too as both real cars used the same fronts.

ROAR1.jpg

Another option are these resin static kit fuel altered rim (perfect replica of the mag wheel used) but technically are "modern" wheels .

Comp Resin wheels.jpg

What do you guys think? Any recommendations as to vintage wheels that are narrow enough for the look of the cycle fronts?

Anyway, that's why I asked & will now go back to building

Hi Paul,

I don't think there is any right or wrong to our hobby. There are differences though depending on what you're trying to accomplish. :)

Your car can be built using parts that most closely replicate the real car whether they are modern or vintage. Or, you could build your car to most closely replicate the real car as a builder would have done in the 60's using parts available to him then.

"you pays your money and takes your choice"

Very true words Rick & can see both sides of the building/replication :good:

May of got too hooked on replicating as best I can in this time of modern and vintage parts...instead of like you say build it like a 60's racer would of done using parts available then.

Which as i should remember is the whole point of these cars!

*goes off to trawl through the parts bin*

Just like real Drag racing! As some of you know I raced drag cars for many years. Anyone who has raced 1-1 cars of any type knows all the trials and tribulations that go along with it. No need to rehash it here.

After dropping the ball on the first drag proxy ( reasons mentioned in another post ) I thought I'd step back in.

I see this car on Ebay and figure since it's coming out of Florida it would be fitting to revive it.

DSC05388.JPG

Seller states it runs good, just needs wires. No pic of the brush side. When it gets here I see it has half a broken brush holder and no brushes! I contact the seller and he basically says too bad as the guy he got it from said it ran and he's sticking to that story. What an ***hole I say to myself but keep the car anyway cause' it's cool.

I drilled the rivet out, taped the hole for a 2-56 screw and installed some brush hardware including NOS brushes to see how it runs. Like a kid on Christmas morning I power it up and BLAMO the epoxy explodes taking the arm and NOS brushes with it. WTF

Here are some pics of the car including the wonderful lightning work done to the motor plates.

DSC05389.JPG

DSC05390.JPG

I have another "65" with a hot arm and bearings but stock case I'm going to have to use.

I always wanted to build a lightened motor. I had an extra "65" plate so I thought I'd try my hand at it. You can see it here, started it today.

DSC05391.JPG

Remember I said trials and tribulations? I don't need no stinkin' vise! I'll hold it with my hand while I drill, what could happen?

DSC05387.JPG

Just like Aurora said, " so close to real racing! "  :)

P.S. if anyone has a dead "65" ( need not run ) I need parts. Thanks

 Hi Joe,

I have some DC-65 parts for sale. No brushes or springs and plungers though. I have new old stock in the package:

6 volt arm

Both style side plates with bearings and brush holder plate

And one loose motor missing the arm and brushes/springs

I love your eBay find. Neat car.

Good luck with your project,

Rick

Joe!

Very KooL car !

Love the rails, the body, color and the lightened motor parts.

Sorry about the 'arm' and 'finger' ... damage.

Most of all glad you'll be joining us for the second annual.  :good:

OK, another question. I was just looking at the substitute "65" I was going to use. I thought it was a real Pittman but it looks like a very close but not exact copy. It is only marked Japan on the plates. I was not aware there was a copy made of this motor. Was there? And who made it. Is it any good?

Have to make a front wheel ruling soon.

Here is what I'm thinking.

  • The transition and bridging of 'Static Model kits' and Slot Cars has always caused sacrifice in scale wheel selection.
  • Skinny wire fronts ... don't know of anything other than wide Ruskitt or wheel inserts from Strombecker, Revell ... etc.
  • 12 spoke ... can't think of any off hand.
  • Modern wheels with inserts look great ... see the Kurtis Proxy cars.
  • Dynamic, K&B, MDC and others do offer some nicely detailed wheels.
  • The modern rear allowance in the 2nd annual is 'liberal' to help the car count and for guys to get 'that much' traction if desired.

Paul,

I didn't name any names ... lol

The front wheels on Joe's car look right for a period Altered class slot car..

Roar's car is super nice but those 12 spoke fronts don't really match the 6+6 spoke the old cars had.

I'm building up an AMT Bugaboo static based 'Rod' and it too has motorcycle fronts.

Possible second entry. Wanted to try to get a hard body car in too. We'll see what happens. Another Ebay mess. I actually bought it because it had a cherry MPC '66 GTO chassis under it. Body has a cracked roof and missing glass among other problems. I guess I could put the MPC plate back under it with some work and run an MPC chassis but that would be too easy. Got this nice Dynamic with a modded padlock. Sounds powerful but the chassis setup weighs in at a staggering 12 ozs. Quite a heavyweight. Will need a diet for sure.

Then I got to thinking what kind of "clown" would drive a Rambler Gasser?  I found this toy the other day on the garage floor and said, hey that head is 1/24!

DSC05401.JPG

Ripped it apart today and stuck it on a used Revell driver with some mods. A little paint and there you have it. The perfect driver.

Sometimes my mind is a scary place  :wacko2:

:laugh2: seen that very hopeful starting bid price rail before :shok: slightly over priced!!!

Don't know the brand , but the fronts look similar to the ones BAD Bill used on his yellow Fiat in the NorCal race .

Bob, don't know if this helps. I have one set each of those spokes but although they look similar they are different. One comes to a peak in the center and one is flat. They look like poorly plated plastic but are actually metal. Extremely light weight. Unfortunately I do not know the brand but Don S. may. I will look to see if I have any extras for you.

Also take a look at the round hole wheels which I believe are Strombecker although I have not seen another set of the small diameter ones. Hard to see but the ones on the chassis are much smaller than the loose ones. They are both for 1/16" axle. I think these are nicer than the spokes.

DSC05439.JPG

Interesting use of the inboard collars for rear axle spacers on that rail.

Wait, maybe you can buy it for the very reasonable asking price, switch the front wheels for something else and then quickly turn it over for $1800. Sounds easy enough  :dance3:

Very nice little front wheel collection indeed Joe. Like the Strombecker ones :)

Is that a Lone Wolf rail project those rims are fitted to? :D

Sorry Joe, can't help, don't recognize those front wheels at all.

The $1800 is a bit high, but you do get a set of Batmobile knockoffs...

Joe,

Can I have those? :shok:  :D

I think the spoke fronts you show are the same as the ones on the 'big dollar dragster' on epay.

The collars on the inside would only work if the bushings are glued in.... no?

Don, somebody 'just had to' put Bats on rail .... I never thought of that

So,

I get a call today and 'someone said' .. "I'm building a Wheelstander and I'm gonna win with it"  :clapping:

My answer .... "No your not" ... :sun_bespectacled:  :sarcastic_hand:
