Bob,
You must be referring to the foot race with Steve walking down track against the rail....right?
He out walked the rail but couldn't get his finger in the slot to trip the lights!!!
Rail WON!!!!!

Post-race tech info ? Is it possible to connect with the driver of one's car, Questions like:
How well did tires bite? Spin?
Gear ratios good ? Need to change ?
Guide flag/drop arm issues ? Hop ?

At 7 sec and 9 mph I cant imagine to much guide /arm hopping ?
But on my other 2 rails, on at 1.3 sec and the other at 1.65 sec runs, was there tire spin ? Did they wind out on gearing before the traps ? Not being there and observing this data would be useful ? ( I know after the 1st runs and glue at end of track it would of changed tire bite then after.)

Regarding the unlimited cars Bob, just how *unlimited* can we go?
I've got it regarding the motors requiring just the padlock lam pack or side plates /pole pieces for the open cage..
Is everything else as per the main Rods N Rails rules such as vintage fronts, main gears etc?

Paul, pay no attention to the vintage fronts rule. Interpret the other rules as you see fit

Joe, I'm sorry you are unhappy with the results but please don't beat around the bush, I asked which cars? Are you referring to Bob Ellis fronts?

You never know at the very least, magnet zap, gear ratio and tires sounds a good start

Exactly correct on the motor,
Unlimited cars must have padlock magnet laminations or OEM cast end plates and the open frame must have the steel side (magnet) plates. Parts can be lightened.
We should nail down an overall length or wheelbase, the tracks are so wide and the sidewinders are so wide the width rule doesn't seem to be a big deal.
No brushless motors. Bodies or drivers optional.
Everything else is wide open ... unlimited.

Paul B, I wish I could do a drivers impression of all the cars but 'handlin' things' kept me from seeing all the runs.
If you don't have a track to test on I'll be glad to help you test and tune your cars at Bill's before your next race.
Of the three cars you sent - 1 sick - 2 good.
The expectation was there would be video, that would have really helped everyone understand their cars 'behavior'.

I know it's all to do with motor spec, tire size etc ,but just a real rough idea would be great

I WAS going to zap the magnets on the red roadster , but I ran out of ambition.....
Maybe I can get it together better NEXT year......
I also have my blue monster from 1963 for the exhibition class....but it is not a padlock or even permanent magnet motor... One of my dads shelf items from a 1930's Buick. Dashboard series wound 6 -volt fan motor with boston bevel gears and a brass tube space frame. Round can motor bigger than your fist and I did mount pick-up and van bodies on it. Slow even on 18 volts, but any more and it torque/rolled over on the next lane.

Look anything like this Larry? An AC motor from who knows where in a slot chassis that I picked up on ebay many years ago... actually sounds pretty good on the dyno at 10 volts or so, but no idea what it would do on the track... and I think those are Erector Set bevels!

While still new at messing with these motors .... zapping has 'slowed' down my Valiant.

On the look out for a for an electromagnet padlock, as a simple DC to AC circuit might work.

So much work went into this and thanks again to all who gave their time etc.
Just thought I would rant for a moment. Don't want to be marked as a complainer or sore loser. My cars were slow and that's why I lost. I have no problem with that. I know this was all for fun. Since it was class racing there were certain guidelines that were laid down as far as car specs.
As far as I can see from just looking at the pics, at least 3 cars that made it to the podium were not within specs.
Many entrants including myself put a lot of time and effort in to stay within the guidelines.
Oh, and a sticker would have been fine instead of writing my name in indelible ink on my bumper
OK, there, I said it

Only a photo or an in-person does the blue monster justice.....I will post later than sooner. Delco 6 volt fan heater motor...is NOT a padlock motor.
