That sounds like a good idea... although we did get some very creative padlocks in unlimited...

Maybe we should allow 'any' motor in unlimited.
Maybe not?
As if you allow any motor wouldn't that include modern open/strap motors and teeny hawk cans with Neos and cobalts? much lighter even compared to a reduced lamination no endplate padlocks ??
Even Bills DC65 based very clever/trick rail wouldn't stand a chance against that guys "Bubbles" FC running .600 ish runs Probably has more speed in the rail with tire/ratio/arm tuning but still maybe not in that FC range?
I thought the unlimited class was showing off the "vintage padlocks" running trick machined parts/unlimited tweaks with modern neo/cobalt mags.

I'm usually pretty much in tune with G-Bob but:
Maybe we should allow 'any' motor in unlimited.
I can't see much point in letting modern motors in. Wheelie bars and neos are enough of a stretch, IMO.
I think Bill B really nailed the unlimited concept, and raised the bar tremendously. I guess what I am saying is the motor tech should be early '60's based with some specific exceptions allowed in unlimited. That shouldn't rule out things like Pittman boat motors, Delco windshield washer motors, or all of the model train stuff or other "re-purposed" stuff that was tried. That keeps it interesting. I still want to work on Bonners and Wilsons too, but who has time?
I guess I am with Paul on this one.....

Easy Paul ... No one wants to race against 'Bubbles' ... right HiLine2
No retro walks or straphangers allowed.
We got dates!

I'd race against Bubbles if I get the right combination of stuff together But who knows if the bits & pieces I could throw together will work?

Are you talking about a "Head-On Hardbody" demo derby thrill show?
I wouldn't expect to much chrome trim back from that proxy

Maybe make "Bubbles II" a 36D rail ... out of a Classic Viper body ...... there must be a good graphic design image for that on the internet.
I slipped an old'n cracked blue Viper over a set of R-geo rails .... that got me thinking and then I ran for a clear Garvic Lunar.
sometimes too many options is not good for production ... better for dreaming.

Bob, in answer to your questions, I am not going to rehash the rules issue. Awards have been handed out and the race is over. Let each contestant make their own determination.
No worries on the HHO bumper. Name is gone and so is the chrome I can just foil over it. Mainly pointed that out as a suggestion for next time.
As far as unlimited etc. When I first proposed the Padlock proxy I wanted to stay within the original 60's spirit. Really just padlock type motors, Pittman 65,85 Ram 857, Kemtron etc.
Just a couple classes perhaps. Stock case motor with any arm and modified motor, lightened etc. All parts and pieces 1960's era.
Some of the unlimited cars are works of art. They have their place but not in my original idea of a Padlock proxy.
I know you can't go back to the day of full on Magwinders and 36 volts.
Simple cars and simple rules would make it fun for everyone.

The only 3 that were true vintage Proxy unlimited cars were BAD Bill's 2 rails and David's pickup . Bill's rails still ran padlocks with custom parts and neo magnets,David's had the RAM 426 motor with neo magnet and a Havlicek arm..
All the other cars/competitors looked like cars that were just making up the numbers on the day, as they were all powered by can motors
To me, using the "unlimited" name it's literally what it is ...set the parameters of how far people are allowed to go and crack on .
That's why I asked Bob to clarify my understanding of that classes rules as long as you had the padlock laminations or open cage pole pieces/side plates, the rest is completely open.
If it's going to be standard padlock with any arm, lightened padlock etc then we already have that class just minus the cobalt/neo mags the "RAIL" class....

Paul, you pretty well nailed it.
I let the 'can' cars run in unlimited because we had so many guys bail and not show.
Bill Pinch had expenses to cover as we based everything on people who committed entries and the number of drivers that showed up to drive them.
Some calls have to be made on race day ... a 'can' car would never be declared the winner of Unlimited. I knew BillB would probably win and happy he did.
I thought Pitt Man would win the Rail class ... but... that's a different story. Glue

Just wanted to make sure Joe saw that, as I think the unlimited is fine the way it is with the mods allowed on either motor, modern rare earth magnets and everything else is open
Bill's cars showed what can be done & how far you can push the old motor design!
Still bummed I couldn't finish mine in time

My approach to the Unlimited Class.... more of an experiment then a competition. Can a padlock based motor with Neo magnets perform as well as the 60's motors on 36 volts.
I'm fine with Unlimited running in the Exhibition Class, they truly don't belong in competition with Rods and Rails. This class may not be for everyone, but the Unlimited certainly has its place today just as it did in the past.
Joe you're right, sadly we'll probably never see 36 volts again, on the bright side Magwinders are making a come back!!!!

A great goal to go along with a .999 Alnico target. The experiment IS the competition. We challenge ourselves to make a better mouse trap for Unlimited.

Exactly ..

Yup .. see above.

Paul I moved this over from the rules thread.
Think you had the Lancer, they are nicer than the DuBro IMO. I have one NOS Lancer for about 15 years and never have seen another. I have a clear DuBro if you want that.
Absolutely on the swapping.
