I would like to get some input and somewhat of a consensus on how we should award the 'Best Engineered' and 'Best Appearing" box plaques.
Potentials:
It's wide open to any one that reads this to offer a comment or suggestion on how to do it.

Bob, I like your suggestions and I'd limit it to the participants as they have some skin in the game!! JMO.

I like Sam's idea of all voting for best appearing, and the entrants voting for best engineered.

Hmmmm, what catches my eye are hemi heads on the Pontiac engine. Mickey Thompson??
Very cool old dragster.
Posted 02 May 2014 - 09:48 PM
Thanks Bob.
I can credit two things to catching that.
1) My first car was a '55 Chrysler New Yorker 331 hemi gas gobbler
2) All through the 70's I was "block man" and assembler in an automotive machine shop

IIRC the 331 Firepower was a 2BBl right?
Edit - TMI removed

Hey Bob,
The 331 came with a WCFB Carter 4 bbl.as I recall.
I got a reliable 6mpg with mine.
I think the only 2bbl in the Chrysler line was the Saratoga??? It's engine was based on the early 318. (pre LA)
Glad gas was in the 20-26 cent a gallon range back when I owned it. I was pulling in a buck an hour working part time at the slot car track. (high school)
Oh, the ultra cool Chrysler 300 released that year did have dual fours on its 331.
Sure glad you lived to tell the story of your family's T&C, scary stuff.

Ok....
Back to the original topic
Yesterday, I took my three cars to my semi-local dragstrip for a tryout.
They seem to run well and behaved themselves, even on 16 volts.
So now I must find some safe packaging for the two long trips and say goodbye to them for a while.

Thanks Pitt Man.
BTW: The pot of golden oldies grew by 5 motors and a motor mount over the weekend.
I would like to give a big shout out of thanks to those sending prizes.
Hopefully ... Like the new Verizon commercial.

Rail has a 'Bug' Call into Exterminator.. WCB.
The flow of goodies has stopped ....
Plaques should be in tomorrow-ish.
Getting the winners padlock trophy ready and the base plaque is coming in.
10 days till the tree lights up .... Is everyone clear on the shipping procedure guidelines?

Progress so far , set backs, ups & downs and severe THRASHING till the last possible second!!!
Last minute progress on the Bug with the sincere hope it will be done in time, shipped and arrive in time for the race!
It was going all so very well! Armatures had been selected for the 2 motors, with plans for one car & one rail. The chassis had been started tayloring to the 3V beast to go under the VeeDub body, with the DC85 with 6V arm for a possible Rail .
Suddenly it all got very real and time had flown past!!! Last week the 2 motors got bolted together and tested on the power supply. The 6 Volt DC85 ran but the 3V beast didn't run and just threw out a bunch 'O sparks when trying to connect second supply lead !!!!!!!!!
Having already spoken to Rick Thigpen /DC65X about zapping the magnets I asked his advice as I'd never messed with these motors before. Possible timing/brush issue or short on the arm was the possible solutions with a random thought of Dead magnet thrown in from my Dad in the UK!!
Upon metering the arm it showed fine with readings in the normal range ..so with time short I packaged up & shipped the motors off to Rick for a session with his raceway sized ZAPPER ! Thank you Rick!!!
Turns out the magnet was indeed DEAD!
Even after a serious slap from the zapper it was still showing low !
As soon as they arrived back the dead motor was connected and it WORKED!!!!!!!!!!! not just worked but screamed & whistled like a Mura!!!
So after dodging a bullet & having to severley modifying the chassis for the 6V motor it was time to get cracking!
Used an airbrush for the very very first time ever to lay some color on the VeeDub !!!!! Mucho practice to do but it did the job long with some wobbly sign writing done aswell. Not the perfect color match to the original Beetle dragster from the 60's but with such short time & having never done any airbrushing I was happy
Plus minus the cool flames or sponsor stickers.... that will appear when I build a more modern Beetle dragster.
Oh and like a **** I made a drop arm for the chassis while the motor was away being zapped , yep turns out I soldered it on too near the motor mount so the large Padlock wouldn't slide down into the chassis!!
Fast forward to typing this message the car is almost done! Motor in , pinion & lead wires soldered on with body as finished as it's gonna be
Tomorrow I Still gotta run the darn motor in!!! oh and the small matter of gluing & truing the rear tires !! So it's gonna be a miracle if this thing makes it down the strip but *should* be there for the green light .
Oh and here's the original 60's drag racing VeeDub that struck fear into the large V8 powered machines & was inspiration to this very loosely based representation/concept!!
Oh and Bob just out of curiosity which way round do the lead wires have to go , looking at the guide?? Silly question but I gots to know! Can't be having this thing go backwards!!!!!
