IF YOUR NAME IS MATT, YOU HAD A GOOD WEEKEND!
LIKE US ON FACEBOOK (PLEASE!)

MELBOURNE, FL - (19 SEPT 2014) - (he drag racing) Car count was solid yet again this week and for the third straight week it was a Lewis who was best off the line in the first round to take the light money.  Matt's .006 was good enough to get the "Big Check".  Matt  went on to fill the semis (all four cars) - I believe that's the first time it's been done at TheRaceway.  Congratulations to Matt on a perfect night!

Saturday night it was another Matt who pretty much dominated the racing side of the RAY SNODGRASS MEMORIAL PROXY RACE (or, more specifically Matt Bowmans CAR).  We qualified the cars Friday night while the Drag Races were in progress. Kenny Snodgrass ran each car for 30 seconds with the best single lap determining starting position.  Matt Boman's HCX #8-M was .2 seconds quicker than the next best car with its 2.397 fast lap.

Saturday afternoon we gathered 8 of the very best Oval racers in the county to drive the cars which came from Illinois, Mississippi, Germany, Switzerland as well as local entries from Bob Israelite, Kenny Snodgrass (Ray's Son) and Matt Boman.

BEST APPEARING judging was first with Kenny's Blue #22 getting the most votes.

We then ran a "controlled practice" session where each driver had 30 seconds with each car to get a feel for each machine and to see if we could shake anything loose and make any necessary repairs or adjustments before the race.

The drivers drew lanes and, of course, the driver would stay on his lane as the cars ran through the rotation.  Lane assignments were as follows:  Red - Matt Boman, White - Steve Bowman, Green - Dennis DeMole, Orange - Thomas Holland, Blue - Kenny Snodgrass, Yellow - Terry Tawney, Purple - Bob Rondinone and Black - Lee Fish.

After 18 minutes of racing, it was the 8-M of Matt Boman who put a lap-a-segment on the field to get the win.  The Empire Racing #2 Blue Car (out of Chicago) was runner up with the Snodgrass Family #22 just edging the Ray Price's Gold #8 (also from Chicago) for third.
The Boman #8 also recorded the best segment of the race (38 laps) with Lee Fish driving the car on the black lane.  Best race laps were recorded by the 8-M with Bob Rondinone at the helm on Purple, the Orange Simoniz #4 (also Bob on Purple) and the Green Empire Racing #0 (Lee on Black).  Each car ran a best race lap of 2.359.  Paul Wolcott's Schaefer Gears #12 was the only other car to go under 2.4 (2.360), but had a few mechanical hiccups relegating it to 12th place (all cars were running at the finish).

Great job by all the builders and a big THANK YOU to the drivers who volunteered a big chunk of their Saturday afternoon to carefully guide each entry through hundreds of race laps.

As far as "looseness" of the track, they sure looked like they were scooting around pretty fast in the video !

Everybody ran the same track.  I'd rather have looseness than too sticky and have them tilting at every corner.

Next time I won't trim my flag post so short ! Lesson learned, my post was fine until the addition of spacers to allow for 30 thou braid recess.  I'm happy just knowing my car handled well and was competitive.

Jaak it's real hard to give advice on miniature cars long distance, however, I will make you a proposal, as long as the car is already here in the US, have it sent to me along with mine instead of going home.  I'll examine it in detail and tell you every single thing I think you could improve, then send it back to you.

Pablo I would love that  :good:

That is way more then I dare to ask anybody, greatly appreciate your offer and will take you up on it Sir,

Bob could you please send it to Pablo, Thank you.

Another big shout out to all who helped made this possible, from the drivers up to the support crew marshals and the families who let the big boys play with their toys :hi:

The Chicago fleet is back.  Several of us are going to South Band , Ind for a hardbody race on the 25 of October.  They have a nice OVAL and I will do a demo to see if there might be interest for another proxy round.  Will start a new thread if it pans out.

Slot Car Racing is Alive and Well in East Central Florida!

By Charlie McCullough, Coastal Angler Magazine

Melbourne, FL – Twelve 1/24 scale Indy Roadster slot cars from around the world converged at the Raceway.biz on September 20, 2014 for a proxy-driven memorial race to honor local automotive racing enthusiast Ray Snodgrass.  Times have changed since the slot car craze in 1966-1967.  Technology now provides the ability for folks to share information globally, in seconds.  The Slotblog.net internet forum for slot cars connects today’s slot car folks, many of whom continue enjoying this intriguing sport some 50 years later…

Bob ‘Gator Bob’ Israelite organized and managed the event for friend Kenny Snodgrass’ father who recently passed away.  The Raceway.biz track owner Bill Pinch directed the race with the power set a 11 volts, on the tricky 8-lane tri-oval track.

Ray’s wife Shelby, Kenny’s wife Millie, grandson Scott and great grandson Ethan helped set a memorial table displaying Ray’s stock car racing trophies and picture albums for everyone to enjoy.

Some of the best slot racers in Florida agreed to drive – Lee Fish, Bob Rondione, Terry Tawny, Kenny Snodgrass, Thomas Holland, Dennis Demole, Steve Bowman, and Matt Boman.  Interestingly, in this proxy race drivers remained in their respective lane, the cars rotated among drivers taking a turn in each lane to determine most laps for the win.

Drivers interviewed following the race commented how much fun they had and asked how soon another event like this would be coming to The Raceway.  “I think the biggest challenge was trying to get used to the different cars handling aspects, and keep them on the track pushing as many laps as the car could take”, said Terry Tawney, “Ya Charlie, some of them would get sideways.”  Dennis Demole commented his challenge, “Driving these loose cars, especially #15, was the hard part.  Switching the cars on different lanes was a very fun deal – more fun than I thought it would be.”

Local Pro racer and proxy entrant Matt Bowman really helped with the cars.  Pre-race tire conditioning, noticing a broken solder joint (Gator Bob repaired), checking guide ride height, and adjusting all the cars for gear mesh and overall tuning improved the times logged in qualifying.  These local experienced slot racers kept a close eye on the cars as they drove each one, and a few cars were repaired under green light, then back on the track before the heat ended.

Official Results:

1st place: Matt Boman’s white #8M Harbor City Express Car

2nd Place: Rick Davis’ blue #2 Empire Racing Car

3rd Place: Kenny Snodgrass’ blue #22 Ray Snodgrass Tribute Car

Best Appearing: #22 Ray Snodgrass Tribute Car

Best Appearing runner-up: John Austin’s #72 Wynn’s Car
