A lot of the reading will be a surface field from the overall motor that will bleed off quickly. As opposed to the actual "core" magnet strength.
Run it, then try it.
Since you are part of our little community, I don't know how many reading the blog have figured out we have his little "circle", have you thought about zapping motors for the group. I know Duffy will never, as an example, have room for the safe use of a zapper! But I am GIVING him some of this stuff as are you!

Well, now that you've Outed us, how many poor lost souls d'you think will come sniffing around for membership?Since you are part of our little community, I don't know how many reading the blog have figured out we have his little "circle", have you thought about zapping motors for the group.
And to you prospective PLS'--you do know the Groucho-ism about wanting to be in a club that would admit YOU?

I don't know about the rare earth zapping capability. As far as being overkill, this Carlisle unit is the only new one of its type made specifically for slots that I could find.
How do the others from BOW to WRIGHTWAY compare?
For me it's like comparing apples to oranges. I wanted an "old school" unit like I remember from the 60's not a modern air core job even if they are "better".

Yup, I'd buy Rick's Magblaster too. I've just always wanted the old school kind so that's what I bought .

I'm glad you're enjoying this thead, it's fun for me too. I'm also doing my part to help the economy right .
OK, so here's what Mr. Postman borught me this month:
It's a Micro Mark Precision Press converted to a tapping fixture. It taps holes perfectly perpendicular to the work piece. That's really important with flat head screws. If a flat head is even a little off from square it looks like grunt. Here's the link to the press.....
Micro Mark Precision Press
..........and the taping fixture conversion:
Tapping Fixture Conversion
Yes, it's over priced but it's a nice piece and I didn't have to spending "slot car building time" to make my own. Here it is in simulated action ( I don't tap end bells in assembled motors ):
Next we have a neato micro screw holder-starter for No.0 thru No.2 screws:
Here it's holding a No.0 flat head screw for the Champion end bell. This thing is a bargain and a real time saver for those of us with fat fingers:
The link to Micro Mark:
Micro Mark Screw-Starter
Lastly the one that broke the bank this month. A collet set for my Sherline mini lathe complete with handy dandy wood case:
Now I can precision ream my Sonic 2mm pinion gears to fit Pittman, Kemtron, Ram, etc motors . Here's the link:
Sherline Deluxe Collet Set
Yes, this thing is REALLY overpriced but it's of very high quality. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it .
Until next month.........

Hello Rick, I just got the same zapper. Some folks say you can Zap sealed motors. What do you think?OK, it's real purdy but does it work . Here's an old RAM motor that I removed and then replaced the magnet from the pole pieces:
Into the Big Dog it goes..........ZAP!
Here's an new old stock RAM 850 fresh out of the box:
BEFORE
ZAP!
AFTER
The last thing I tired was a pair of Mura Super-B magnets which gaused 565/592 . After a ZAP they read 691/685
IT WORKS!

Hello Rick, I just got the same zapper. Some folks say you can Zap sealed motors. What do you think?
I don't know John so I tried it with the only "mouse motor" I have. Here's the before reading:
Into the "Big Dog" it goes............ZAP!
It now reads............
Is the Big Dog working . So I try zapping some 40+ year old Champion ARCO's:
The before reading..........
...........and after the ZAP:
Well, that worked OK. Then I remembered that Falcon was one of these from PCH:
Zapped Falcon from PCH Parts Express
So its already been zapped by PCH, for better or worse. So much for that test. I don't have another modern sealed motor to try Zapping. Do you have a digital gauss meter to do a test with?

That Micro Mark Press is a really nice piece! I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing. Having discussed a pinion press in another thread - I'll bet this would work great for a pinion press!!
Rodney informed me that I had missed you the one Sunday I was there. Hope to see you at the track sometime soon! I always find your cars "incredible"!!.
Thanks,

But, what’s the heck is this junk for?
The 2 screws on the left are off my stock Hudy tire grinder. On the right are two 4 X 0.7mm X 40mm long screws, two plastic knobs and a thumb nut from McMaster Carr. In the middle I’ve modified the screws by threading and cutting to length for my own conversion of the Hudy. That shiny silver thumb nut allow me to lock the setting so there is no chance of it changing during grinding:
That is an 1.250” diameter tire in the machine to show it fits with room to spare.

OK, here's some new stuff:
The bull's eye level is no big deal but what's the other junk . Them's be genuine Class X .060" inspection gage pins. They are straight as an arrow and have a surface finish of 4 micro inches...that's 4 millionth of an inch . So the pins be smooth so an armature can roll real nice in a static balancer like this vintage Tradeshipe one:
I Duffied the grooves for the pins to sit in nice and parallel with Mr. Milling Machine. I also cut an extra set of pin grooves for shorter armatures. The result is a...........
TEAM PITTMAN BALANCER:
Well, it may not really be Team Pittman....but it's a pretty cool toy!

1. put it in the Big Dog the wrong way and hit it.
2. take the new reading.
3. then put in the correct way and see if you can bring them back to the original reading.
4. I wager not, and it may ruin the motor, so be prepared to throw it away.

Forget that, just get the biggest tank you can find, and hook up a Fridge compressor to it.I was thinking I'd have to spend a fortune on a Silent Air compressor for my hobby room as normal compressors are too loud for me inside the house.
They are dead silent, and, best of all, they're FFFRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Takes about two hours to pump up my 60 gallon tank, but, using all normal hobby tools etc, it's pretty rare if I have to pump it more than once a day.
When pressure casting, I get about 8 to ten pot fulls before I have to pump up again. 4 pot loads a day is about my limit anyway.
The lack of noise is just great, and, did I mention, they're FFFRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
I've been using the same compressor for over 30 years now. Get the biggest one
9even big ones are pretty small) you can scrounge. They vary greatly as they go up in size in how quick they will pump up a tank.

& sorta-related, and it needed a bump up anyway.
Mopar Rob & I were talking about this the other day--for those moments when I just have one bit to get
square and don't want to fire up the Warner & Swasey #4 Turret Lathe, it's my handy-dandy mini miter block.
This is just a brass bar, dadoed to hold the steel file-carrier, and with an assortment of notches and steps
to hold rod, tube, or plate square to the filing surface.
Works dead-easy, just swipeswipeswipeswipe and there's your workpiece, chockful of rich caramel squareness.
Maybe a few more swipes to work a piece down to a dimension, but at least at my bench it's pretty convenient.
