Very nice John.. Have you run that at any recent Retro East races?

On the front BBs, I would bet that the wheels are locked to the axle.

My first brass build in 45+ years:
Another GVP from a kit. But I hadn't done anything like it since the original Jail Door days.
It was fun and I had to relearn a lot of stuff.
With my driving "skill" I figured I'd better build it as strong as possible!
Thanks to:
GVP for the design
R-Geo for the kit and jig
All the builders here whose ideas I borrowed
Bill, just a tip, start with the over rail slider on the tuning fork all the way to the front, having ran a lot of these, I have found that it is best run with the slider all the way to the front rather than at the back, for a King Track, or a Flat Track, Mill

Thanks Mill
At present the slider tubes are neither soldered together nor fixed to the rails. i put them there during assembly just in case I needed them at a later date,
Your tip has been stored in memory though.

I'd say Bud did a nice job on that chassis. It looks like it's built for a 4.5" stockcar in the photos. Is it?
I intend to live forever! So far, so good.

Its a solid front axle fronts are both locked on axle not independent.
I stand corrected .. and surprised.

(sorry for crossthread drift) Bill, yes, it is a stocker. Bud is a master painter; this pic doesn't even begin to show how good he is.
Sir Gorski, when I grow up I want to grow my hair and be just like you.
That chassis blows my mind, I could look at it for hours and think, think, think.
Never seen anything like it, but of course you know that.

Here's a new I just finished this morning for NERR racer Woody Hazelwood. This is a combination of the chassis I have been using for the Sovereign at Modelville and a wishbone chassis I have had great success with.
.078 outer rails
.047 wishbone
.064 pans
.032 nose peice
CR guide tongue and motor bracket
15/16" guide lead, 4" wheel base
Completed car will weigh in at 115 grams

Look, listen and learn questions.
Dominic, if the bite bar is soldered solid to the main rails does that impede the 'twist' that the 'wishbone' (wannabee centerline hinge) is designed to provide?
John,
Do you have to set the motor endplay or move the magnets toward the endbell for the reversed pinion to keep a good mesh?
Doesn't the locked fronts scrub off speed in the turns?

The solid front set-up doesn't seem to slow him down, as Mr. Gorski is always a threat for TQ at the Retro East races.
Having watched how fast cars go through the corners with the tail drifted out, I don't think it makes a lot of difference. It might even stabilize the car.

Dom, what size wire did you use for the hinges? .039?
Speaking of Woody, he had a rough go on the sovereign this past Tuesday....multiple bank launches meant landing on the pit tables 5 or 6 different times!

The bite bar is only soldered to the outside rails. The wishbone is free to move as it wishes. The original wishbone design I made about 4 years ago I soldered completly together (see below) and the bite bar is also soldered to the wishbone. This chassis is stiff but also very forgiving weighing in at 112 grams. It works great on banked and lesser banked style tracks.

I have not done this with a retro yet, but years ago when I was actively running 4.5" nascars I often ran with both fronts locked onto the axle. I found I could drive much harder into the turns. Those with the idependent fronts had an easier time rolling through the middle part of the turn.

The wire for the hinges is .032. I have also used .025 but that is a little light. The car I ran on the King last month used .025 for the hinges.
I talked to Woody on Saturday and that JK chassis he has needs some stress de-tentioning LOL. He will be in good shape for Saturday and hopefully Tuesday night if I can make it there this week.

Congrats to both you and Gary on a job well done.
Of minor note, Eric used a prototype kit, but the production one is very similar.

Thanks Mike! The prototype kit was real easy to build. Every piece in the kit was perfectly flat on my surface plate. The components in the kit also fit together really well.
I strongly recommend this kit to anyone looking for a simple platform to build any F1 chassis they wish from. This kit can be used to easily build 8-railers, Samson clones, tuning forks, and z-rails.
