I actually had some time to build a new Can Am.  This one is from the RGeo GVP kit.

My compliments to Rick for producing such a nice kit.

My first attempt at a tuning fork chassis.

...and then, I discovered that stacking piano wire for my center section was easier than Dremeling slots down the springsteel pan like TonyP was doing. What, you haven't done your History here?

Great job on the shakers.

Here is an update on a chassis I built back in November of 2009 (Post#235).

chassis 1.jpg

After some testing of the original design I added some weight and a traditional bite bar and the car was great.  Of course after almost 4 years of taking some hard hits it was time to disassemble and rebuild.

chassis 3.jpeg

Some of the updates where:

  • Extended wheel base from 3.950" to 4.0"
  • Shortened up the rear part of the pan next to the outer rail. I found after being hit in the rear a couple times this was a weak so removed some of it.
  • The original pin tubes were raised up with .047 wire.  This time I used .032 brass.  This also replaces some of the weight I had added. I also adjusted the pin tubes to match my other builds to make body changes easier.
  • Stronger front axle supports.
  • Total car weight will be just over 108 grams

Looks good !

What is the idea for doing the scalloped pans?

Let me take a guess.

It's to allow the body to work more or to keep the body from getting hung up on the pans.

Or just to look cool.
