I finished up the 26D for the above arm. So (in case anybody's interested), the work was:

Arm:

-remove stack insulators, round edges
-coat stack (furnace cement)
-polish arm to fit
-install and set com
-double wind #30 awg
-weld com
-tie / epoxy / balance

Setup:

-remove magnets, cut (stupid stock) shim to center mags in can, shim magnets top and bottom, epoxy magnets to center arm in field
-drill endbell for Champion screws, install
-install/space arm
-wind new set of brush springs
-install NOS brushes
-install post protectors
-re-solder leads
-test-spin

Boy...this is one healthy Champion.

Hey John! Do you ever solder the brush tubes to the hoods? That was always done with the alignment stick in place back in the days. Gus in Sacto

A classic Russkit "23" for Jairus. 55T / #29awg on a Mabuchi stack. This one was a little unusual in that I almost couldn't find anything to balance; one little hole and it was done. Neat motors these old Russkits

So I go out to collect the mail today and there's a big mutha of a box out there from Barney. Well...when Barney says he's going to send a "care package" of stuff to use for building/rebuilding and rewinding motors, he doesn't mess around Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image :

It's going to take a while just to figure out what all this stuff is and sort it. THANKS Barney!

7 lbs of stuff for you to sort. If I kick the bucket the wife would just trash it so you keep it or toss it!:laugh2:

Your welcome John. As I said in the email some is junk but you sort it out. This is all yours and I hope it gets me a couple of ++ in the Barney column for future projects. I still have my stuff that I will send later on when I get a chance. There is a bunch of Mabuchi stuff in there but I do not have any 26D arms but would like you to look for a suspect for me for a later project please. A ton of Mura stuff too in case you can use it. Plus other odds and ends that will keep you up sorting out.

BTW I like the 26D posted and can't wait to see what JW does with it!

hmmm...I have to look closer Barney, I didn't see anything that looked like "junk"...just parts waiting for an application.

There is a bunch of Mabuchi stuff in there but I do not have any 26D arms but would like you to look for a suspect for me for a later project please

Never a problem Barney. I think I have some 26D stuff here but Roger at Mid America has some really nice stuff as does Electric Dreams. I'll hook you up, just say the word.

A ton of Mura stuff too in case you can use it.

There's always projects where Mura stuff works. I think that even the not-so-vintage Mura stuff is great and solidly engineered...you'd be surprised at where those parts might eventually wind up Posted Image Even the epoxied arms can be used. It's a heckuva lot of nasty work, but what you get is great solid stuff for rewinding. On balanced arms, I just toss the lams that have been drilled and keep loose lams for making up arms when I need them.

BTW I like the 26D posted and can't wait to see what JW does with it!

Jairus got the Russkit 23 FT16D, which is also a really nice old motor. That minty Champion 26D was for Ray price, but I'm sure Jairus has great plans for that Russkit !

John, when your [H-->] sticker is on the can's side, like Ray's 26D & Jairus's Russkit 22, how do you indicate the motor's direction of rotation? Just a minor question I realize, but who knows where these motors might end up 10-15 years down the road. :)

Hi Bill,

Glad you asked! Those motors have neutral timing, but almost all of them should be run counterclockwise (viewed from the endbell) whenever possible. There have only been a few that I did to run clockwise for times when that was necessary to be "correct".

I finished off a 36D motor as part of a 3-motor job (one each of the Mabuchi 36D, 26D and 16D motors). I kept the arm on the mild side, doing a #30awg wind with only a slight advance to run CCW (viewed from the endbell). I took a light skim cut on the cut on the com as that ws all that was needed to get the glazing off it and radiused the shoulder of the com to clear the endbell setup I made for this motor:

Posted Image

Getting together the setup, the can bushing was pretty loose on this one, so I soldered-in a new bushing which helped tighten things up. I had a set of Arcos, so I shimmed those top and bottom as well as behind, installing them with two magnet springs and positioning them to center the arm in the field. On the endbell, I fashioned a set of thin brass plates with slots and soldered the brush tubes sort of the way the Champion "orange-picker" (or whatever that thing is called) endbell was done. I capped that off with a set of FT36D hoods whose screws locate and set one end of the endbell hardware and spring post protectors that are drilled and screwed to locate and "set" the other side of the endbell. It was a finicky and tedious thing to do, more so than I would have thought going-in. Between cutting the plates and drilling them to line-up with the holes in the endbell and then jigging the plates and brush tubes to (carefully) solder them, I was in for a couple of hours. I think that it's more "correct" than just installing modern Mura endbell hardware, and it should work well to keep things together and aligned. I finished it all off by bending-up a pair of springs from .015" guitar string material, so that both legs of the springs were long enough to fit the hardware correctly. I topped it all off with a set of vintage lead wires for a little more "accuracy". Here's the beauty-shot:

Posted Image

I ran it at 6V for a while and it runs super smooth; not a barn-burner but a definite upgrade from stock that should hold up well.

Nice job John; that 30 wire should still give you a pretty hot motor, and one that will last!

Thanks Don...I'm thinking the #30 wire plus the endbell mods should do the trick Posted Image

I finished off motor #2 of the 3 motor Mabuchi series for this project. This one is a 26D and the Mabuchi ball bearings were in very good shape (surprise!). I did a #29 wind for this one figuring that the motor could take a little more heat:

Posted Image

I did the same endbell mod on this one as the previous 36D motor. Again, it's a fidgety thing to do cutting, drilling and notching those plates ...not to mention soldering-in the brush tubes. I think it will be a good measure of insurance though. Everything cleaned-up nicely and the magnets were shimmed .007" each. I finished it off by bending a new set of springs:

Hey thanks Gary. The spring thing isn't my trick at all though. I believe it was Don H that told me he had done it when he couldn't find the right springs...so I gave it a try.

I finished up the third of three for the "Mabuchi Trinity" project, this time the FT16D. The arm is a Mabuchi stack but with a Kirkwood com for vintage beefiness and a drill blank shaft. Wind is a #28 as that's about as far as I think you can safely go without swapping the endbell. Connections are all brazed and there was very little work to be done as far as balancing goes. I like it when that happens :)
Posted Image

For the setup, I again did the endbell mod with the sort-of orange-picker modification. After doing a few now, I've gotten better at it, but it now takes me longer Posted Image I guess I'm trying harder now or something, but I think it's a really good way to go with these motors, giving lots of protection and still being pretty "vintage". The can also got some stouter magnets for the #28 wind to push against and the motor just sounds excellent.

Posted Image

Three done and ready to send out! Funny how I thought I was pretty much "getting there" a year or so ago. Posted ImagePosted Image Funny because the motors are still getting better and now I don't feel at all like I'm getting there. What's the old saying..."the more you know, the more you realize you need to learn". Posted Image
