More chassis building this evening.

Threw most of the components on my scale to find out about how much she's gonna weigh.

about 130g when complete.

IMG_2635.JPG

Worked on the front pan hinges, up stops and reinforcing things up front.

IMG_2636.JPG

And another view.

IMG_2637.JPG

Should be able to do some more tomorrow.

Got a little clean up to do but basically complete. Need to add the body mounting tubes.

I did change things a little, set it up for .050 rear clearance with .820 tires. Thinking that the larger tires will look better with the body. Front is .015 with .750 tires.

Pans are hinged with 1/8 square tubing and .055 wire to give the pans a bit of rattle. Bite bar is the same 1/8 square tubing and .055 wire. This set up gives a little up down and a little fore and aft motion.

Front axle is secured with .062 L shaped wire.

Main rails are .055 soldered all the way.

All of the flat brass is .062

It's been a fun build, not too difficult and should be fun to drive.

Next will be install motor, lead wire and guide flag.

After those things comes the body.

Hope to make it to Atlanta Slotcar Raceway this coming weekend for testing.

Scott did you only get the one body or did you get all three JK's?

I am curious to find out the total weight of this setup.

Eddie, I only got the Camaro body. Will probably get the others for comparison.
Looks like the weight will be 135 g maybe a little more or less.
Should get the motor installed this evening and I will put everything on my scale to find out.

Finished the chassis build, weighs126.3g without the body.

IMG_2650.JPG

And 134.6g with the unpainted untrimmed body and no driver.

So after trimming and painting, adding a driver maybe a few grams more.

IMG_2660.JPG

Here are a few more images of the chassis.

IMG_2653.JPG

IMG_2655.JPG

Should be able to get the body trimmed and mounted tomorrow, then painting on Wednesday.

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions.

Very nice---it's dimensions and ground clearance are matching the SCRRA regs for our coupe class so it will be a killer on our flat track if you ever go there.  Clean build--  good job. Let us know what you think of the handling when you get to try it.

Really looking good!  I'm thinking in this case you might be able to go a bit lighter due to it being an angle winder, especially if run on a somewhat banked track.  However I suspect it would be a perfect starting weight for an IRRA (inline) Trans Am car.  Testing will tell the true story.

Here is one I built for a customer about three years ago.  Caveman painted camero. 15/16" guide lead, 3-15/16" wheel base, .812 JK fronts, .820 JK premium rears, Swiss 2* guide tongue, and motor brackets, Parma guide, JK retro hawk geared 9/27. Comes in at 103 grams. All brass is .032. Main rails are .055/.062 combo and the chassis width is 3". Front track is 2-13/16" and rear track width is 2-15/16" to allow clearance for the body.

The Check Point Coupe class was just run this past weekend.  Take a look at Bryan's race report with 3 of the winning chassis.  These are perfect platforms to simply put a Trans Am body on.  And I'd encourage using rear wings like the coupe cars.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback!!!

I really appreciate it!!!

I will checkout the Check Point race report.

Got the body trimmed and mounted tonight, I like the way it sits on the chassis.

Track width is set to 3.125 front and rear, the fender skirts at the rear are wide enough to go with 3.25 but the front is not that wide, the front tires will stick out.

One other thing is that there are no cut lines on the body other than one just below the bottom line of the doors. Not a huge deal, just thought I would mention that.

Weighs in at 132.9 so far.

Metamorphosis took place! I Reckon!

Really, I owned a Camaro way back when and went that direction just for the fun of having another Hot Rod Camaro!

Got it painted and water slide decals on the inside of the body.

An old LaserJet black toner only printer that I have had for years and some decal paper is all it takes.

Want to get a color LaserJet printer so I can do color decals.

Window masks were good, came with the body.

Can't wait to get to the track to test!

Went to Atlanta Slotcar Raceway today ad did some testing.

The car runs very well, easy to drive and fairly quick on the 165 Ft hill climb.

Weighs in at 133 g, geared 14-38, CR-102 for power, Alpha Piranha .820 tires.

.015 front clearance, .050 at the back.

Ran 25 laps on the new motor (yellow lane) and was turning 5.4 sec laps towards the end of the 25 lap segment.

Let the car cool down, checked things over and didn't see any issues with the car.

Put the car back on yellow and ran another 25 laps. best time was a 5.245 sec lap.

I didn't add any extra rear spoiler for added downforce just to see what it would do.

Over all this car is a very good handling car, forgiving when over driven, only de-slotted three times.

I am going to build another Trans-Am chassis, this time in an inline drive chain.

I think the specs should be:

In line drive only

.015 front clearance

.050 rear clearance

.750 front tires (retro can-am) ?

.8125 rear tires

4 inch wheel base

3.125 max width

120 grams min weight

Trans-Am body (of course)

What do ya'll think?

Specs are okay, is this 2nd car being built for an anglewinder vs. inline chassis comparison? If yes, use your basic anglewinder design, but this time build it around an inline centersection, Also, use the same type motor, If not being built for a comparison, use a design & motor of your liking.

very well done, scott. sounds like it handles like a dream. it would also be interesting and fun to see how a retro coupe chassis @130g with a trans am body compares. i am still working on my version(s).

Glad to hear it ran so well Scott. :good:

The specs you gave for the inline are the specs for a retro coupe, other than you have specified the 4" wheel base. I would consider changing the front clearance to .050 same as the rear. At least that way it won't be just change bodies on a coupe chassis.

My bad you did up the weight by 10 grams above the coupe, but still I will stick with what I said.
