Sincere thanks to everyone involved. Bob, I think it was a great idea and maybe something that could have some legs...it made me drag that stuff out of the basement and even start thinking about building something more exotic. Even the locals around here were interested when I did my last-minute testing before shipping them off. I haven't had any luck getting in touch with the guy that originally cloned the chassis, but that could still happen. So maybe next year??? Who knows?
I really liked the stocker/gasser stuff. Maybe next time, it is a gasser body shootout? Like the Valiant, 55 Chevies, Willys, etc. I'd say stick to padlocks and maybe open-frames but again, great effort by all.

I was concerned that with only Don, Paul, Bob S. and Dave mailing in cars this event was going to be a flop. I turned out to be pretty darn successful, the guys had a ton of fun and lots of big laughs.
Common theme was ... "Great idea", "I have to get 'me' some vintage", "When can we do it again", "Thanks for having this gig"
We past 24 total vintage cars, some sat it out. Florida's "Bad Bill" Bilancio of http://www.badracing9.com/ showed up with two big boxes of vintage rods and rails.
When I open it up to have others bring cars and make it a ' bracket race' Florida vintage racers and collectors got the word and brought CARS. I was a great show!
Here are preregistered legal Padlock'ers ready to be judged and then 'stretch their legs'.

Great looking cars.
Thanks Mike,
A few questions.
The rails appear to have drop arms.Yes drop arm cars.
Do they move much? You can see in the short video that the rails do/can lift the front wheels but are balanced much better with the long wheel base.
If they do,does that appear to hurt or help?It really doesn't hurt on the "Rail" cars but it sure does make the short "Rods" somewhat erratic. LOL
Would the cars benefit from wheelie bars, if allowed?Yes. Again more so on short cars.
Posted 20 May 2014 - 12:31 PM
Back in the day, we didn't even think of wheelie bars!! Just pile wheel weights on the nose until it made a pass or slowed to a crawl!! Seriously, I don't think the rails even needed a drop arm at 16v or less, I just made sure that the chassis rested on the arm and that the wheels were up out of the glue. More voltage or more traction would most likely change all of that. We just wanted to keep them period correct, which made it a lot of fun.
Bob, let's talk about gassers!

Thanks to Gator Bob for this great event! Thanks to Bill Pinch with The Raceway in Melbourne, FL.!
When will there be a vintage roundy round race? I will volunteer to assist with acquiring sponsorships, prizes, etc...!
We crashed the party with 3 racers from our private track and brought some vintage cars to share. I was the only one with bracket experience, one of our racers was a rookie, and we certainly enjoyed Gator Bob's event more than the brackets - By luck, team Orange City Raceway and Slot Car Museum took 1st (proxy - Beverly Hillbilly car driven by Garold Page), 2nd (Orange City Raceway car - Dyno Can o saurus dragster driven by Charlie McCullough), 3rd (proxy - yellow chrysler pickup driven by Charlie McCullough) and light money (yellow volkswagen reverse body car driven by Eric Gould) in the bracket races...please don't be mad at us - everyone is invited to check out our 82 ft, 4 lane, 1/24 scale vintage road course just a couple towns north of Orlando! We practice on days ending in 'y', and race vintage on Saturday nights. Send a PM and I'll get your invite and directions...Charlie in Orlando. p.s. we also have a private 55ft legit 1/24 vintage drag strip too - no tree, heads up like the old days

Wow, what a beautiful varied field of draggers.
My eyes went right to the Monkees GTO! Right out of my era.
Job well done everyone.
Let's do this again guys.

"PittMan and The Hillbillies" Strike Black Gold with the overall title in the first annual "Rods and Rails" Proxy.
Sounds like a psychobilly band .... and was a "popular hit" !!!
Way to go Bob S., this car was dead consistant and Jethro was up on the wheel and drove it to the win.
This car was so much fun, got many laughs and it was affectionally called Granny. Every time someone said something like where is Granny, did she fall off? ... I said screw Granny, where the hell is Elly Mae ... and the crowd would roar ... we really had a lot of fun with your car Bob S.
Congratulations on the BIG win and for send in such an outrageous machine. BTW: I don't think any parts came off from the time it left you home.

Charlie, It was a real pleasure to have Team Orange City come out and play.
You all brought really cool cars and did an outstanding job of driving these old cars.
The event was a success due to everyone being involved.
Bill P. as the owner/operator and Steve B. as race control and master 'starter' helped keep things in complete order. I couldn't have done it without all you guys.
My commitment to keep this from being a boring event was fulfilled thanks to guys like you Charlie and BadBill bring out great cars..
Congrats to BadBill on winning Best Appearing and Best Engineered with his killer looking rails.
Here is a picture of Eric taking the 'Light Money" with a .008 leave with PittMan's "Back-Up Bug".
It was only staged the wrong direction once that I saw ... fooled me ... "wait.. is that car front wheel drive?" .. "Hey ... did you miss the arrow on the roof"

Next??
We could talk about roundy-round too, especially if your vintage rules are pretty close to some of the vmra stuff we ran years back. I'd like to see more of the cars that showed up, I like 'em all!
I don't mind mailing stuff out just so it comes back!

Thank Don!
Your car was a Hoot .. lots of fun we ran out of time to do a separate wheel stander show as there were others on site.
The optical track sensors were going nuts and a lot of the cars needed reflective tape added to the guide flag.
The Gar-Vic of Lee F. was one of a few that needed to have the drop arm 'taped'.

It's got a 36D lump in it now, but I am inspired by that Valiant. In goes a Kemtron!! I think I needed to drop some gear for the slightly shorter track and lower voltage, but that car of yours is impressive. When i was a kid I visited Kemtron down the road in Fresno, looking for secret stuff....

Did you find anything good and stash it away?
Here is an upskirt of the top MPH R&R legal car.
Nothing fancy .... All I did to it was stretch the brush springs and 'vent the screw caps' .... the crazy part is it was last zapped from the factory 50 years ago. Geared it 3:1, I'll get a total weight on the car and post it. I sure didn't expect it to be faster on the top end than your rails.

The rails ran right at 40 here before I sent them, again more voltage and more track. I think 3:1 is pretty much a sweet spot for most of these dogs. Mine were mostly in the 2's I think, IIRC the 857 had a lot more top end than the others.
I'd be willing to tear one down for replication if I can't contact the original builder and if anyone is interested....and if anyone is willing to do them. There are several versions, a slightly smaller one for Kemtrons and I also have a Checkered Flag clone in that Willys coupe.
Didn't find much at Kemtron, they were actually more interested in trains, I think. There were some "3v" arms available before they started plugging in the Ram stuff.
