We had the longest hottest summer in recorded history here and I enjoyed it very much.
But the rain is a welcome change, too. I love this land!!!
As for a return trip you could take Hwy 22 out of Salem which turns into 20 all the way to Ontario and the Oregon border. Since you are traveling 47 MPH... that route might be much safer since it's two lane, marked for 55 MPH, and hasn't changed much in 70 years. At least from Bend to Ontario. Not many fuel stops though... Bend to Burns is over a hundred miles and I don't remember a single fuel station last time I went through.
We will talk tonight. Enjoy Evergreen Air Museum.

Manta Ray and myself, the President and Vice-President of the McRib Fan Club, both thought that they were magically cut from a $25 slab of baby back ribs, and were cholesterol and fat-free.
I'm not to sure there's even pork in them. It's like a chicken McNugget, parts is parts pressed together.

According to that article, you'd be better off eating a "road-kill" burger. Smithfield Foods mentioned, sponsors Richard Petty's #43 NASCAR.
Smithfield is also wholly owned by the Chinese now.

They're here!
Just remember, Jairus, everyone brings joy to your home, some when they arrive and others when they leave.
He spent the night here one time, I stuck him out in the barn. The sheep didn't like it at all.
Actually he's a good egg, Jairus, you'll enjoy having him there, but if he starts that snoring crap just put a muzzle on him.

Glag you and your son made it safely, Greg. Hope the car looks as well in person as it does in the photos.

I have not seen the car yet.
It's still in McMinnville at the dealership. Greg will tell all when he gets up, but right now both boys are still fast asleep leaving all the French Roast for ME! Muhahahahaah.
Oh and it's raining.

Zip isn't the person to ask; he only knows about my storing via hearsay. Even when he was visiting the US, he couldn't couldn't have heard me.
Query my traveling buddy Jay Guard if you really want the scoop.
Off to do the trip narrative for yesterday...

First off he is still moderating this forum so be good members:
He is also spending this Sunday morning getting the "A" ready for the long trip home. The route is planned to go out of Oregon via Oregon Highway 22 through Bend, Burns and exit the state at Ontario where he will pick up Interstate 84.
But that could change.
This morning Greg made adjustments to the steering, re-packed one of the front wheel bearings that had the left front wheel a touch wobbly.
Yeah, this guy likes getting dirty.
And a quick check of the book...
(Probably trying to figure out where the shunt wires go...)
And tighten till all wobble is out!
Updates as they happen.

You don't know the plastic bag way to pack a bearing?
Serious question: did Model A's come with Timken tapered roller bearings from the factory? If they did, I'm impressed. Fifties GM cars still had "bicycle" bearings in the front spindles.
Serious comment: no jack stands or supports under the axle. Tsk Tsk Tsk Tsk…. you know better.
For the steering slop I'd look for the guide nut and tighten it.
No, seriously, again, the steering box is a recirculating ball unit, right? If it is, there should be an adjusting nut on the box to adjust the end play of the screw. Be careful if there is one because it only takes a small adjustment to make a big difference in slop.
Oh, and one more: is the Fire Ball bottle on the table a fuel additive or a nerve calmer? It will probably work for both if not over filled….

You don't know the plastic bag way to pack a bearing?
Yeah, I do but only did the outer bearing, as I didn't want to go to the trouble of removing the drum.
Serious question: did Model As come with Timken tapered roller bearings from the factory? If they did, I'm impressed. Fifties GM cars still had "bicycle" bearings in the front spindles.
Yes, they did, Phil.
Serious comment: no jack stands or supports under the axle. Tsk, tsk, tsk... you know better.
Didn't get under the car while the wheel was off. And only lifted it a tiny bit to be able to do that. Yes, I do know better.
Adjusting the left foot wheel bearing and the steering box plus tightening a couple less than tight bolts has fixed the problem almost entirely.

1930-31 As have what's called a two-sector box... A two-turn worm gear with a couple of teeth that intersect it. I did adjust it about a flat on the adjustment nut.
Oh, and one more: is the Fire Ball bottle on the table a fuel additive or a nerve calmer? It will probably work for both if not over filled...
You can't see the bottle of Rumchata next to it... Mike Iles introduced me to Cinnamon Crunch cocktails at his beach house during the Fall Brawl last year. Howie, Tom Hansen, and John Miller can confirm... LOL!

Test drive around the neighborhood proved this guy knows his stuff.
Then the bags were packed and supplies set in.
Vintage "motormeter" works as does the GPS, now programed for Bend, Oregon.
Owners Manual at fingertip reach.
I believe Cheater is ready for the road back home!
He's somebody else's problem now...
Most likely the Oregon Highway Patrol. But I believe the next few posts from our valiant leader will be vvvveeeerrrryyy interesting indeed.
Please pray for the trip and Happy Trails, Cheater!

The car is running well and is quite happy to cruise at 45 MPH. It's still pretty windy, though nothing like yesterday, but with the steering adjusted it's not a problem. The brakes pull a bit to the right, but not strongly and knowing that it will happen I can compensate.
All in all, I'm feeling pretty good about our prospects to make it home right now.
Going to try to make it to Bend, OR, by nightfall, assuming there's lodging there and I'm surfing over to check that right now...

Seriously, be careful. A lot of travelers on the road today heading home so you might run into a few with hot tempers going up toward Detroit lake dam. That should be your steepest grade the whole trip. After that it's quite a gentle climb... and BEAUTIFUL country!
Remember to take pictures.
