We had a great fathers day at The Race Place yesterday.  Glen's son Chris raced with us.  It was said that they had not been on a track together in over a decade.  Jerry had his family there and I had my sons with me too.  It was good racing with family and friends.

Hey Glenn,

Many Dads, me included, have fond memories of slot car racing with our kids. During the 80s, I lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I remember that every single Saturday we would pack up our gear and we would ride out to Slots of Fun in Dallas to race flexi cars. The owner, John (can't recall his last name) ran a fun program. He divided the group into to advanced and beginner for the races so that parents and kids of all levels could race. I think he had a Drag track as well and I recall building some pretty hot cars for the kids to play with.

Slots of Fun is actually the place I got started back in slots after nearly 20 years away from them.  I was on a business trip to the Dallas area and had some downtime, so I thumbed through the phone book for something to entertain myself.  I came across the listing and thought, "wow, people still race slot cars?".  Went to check the place out, talked to the owner John LaRue (sp?) and he said "come back later and I"ll loan you a car to race tonight".  So I did, which of course got me hooked all over again   :D

"Whatever..."

Max, thanks for the pix of my son and me. Our last photo of us racing together is from rcing 1/32 plasticars (Fly, Scalextric types) at a hobby shop in Scotch Plains, NJ, about 14 years ago. So we have a lot of slot car racing to catch up on. My son did good for not touching a controller in all of these years, nor did he ever race on a commercal track before. So now i have to build him a pole position car, i am thinking of an Audi R8. Lots of car projects on my new slot car table.  And i am determined to get my vintage Howmet into the low 7 second range! I'll try a little of this, a little of that, race it, and watch the results. last week i was dragging on the guide flag, so i need to properly adjust the front end.  I also enjoy it when Chris races with is son, as we need the next generation to keep this hobby alive.

Its been a low turnout with the beautiful summer days and holidays but the racing is still good.  Chris is stepping up with his new builds and his lap times are dropping.

Besides a nice tan, Tyler was sporting his new LaFerrari build this week.  Looks like it was another good race.  I am looking forward to getting back on the track again.

prior to this race, my little Can-Am Howmet was turning best lap times in the 7.75 second range. After much chassis tuning, and replacing and re-cutting new fronts, I was able to get a best lap time of 7.35, and during practice I managed to get an even better time of 7.25. So now I have another car that is actually competitive in this series, vs a car that was all show and no go. So- what else can I do to reduce my lap times with this little Howmet?? yeah, this is fun   :)

With lap totals in the 180's and 190's it wont be long until someone hits the 200 mark.  I'm wondering who it will be.

I see that Mike picked up more laps and lower lap times- good going Mike! :sun_bespectacled:  Having car and truck issues at the same time, so hope to have one vehicle sorted out this week and back to racing.

The bar has just been raised....  A new class record of 200 laps was laid down this weekend.  Joe, Tyler and Mike also set new best personal lap totals.  Mike did a great job building a new car that has him now in the 7.0 lap times.  And it was good to have Dave back with us.  Unfortunately his Lotus was having some technical difficulties.  Good racing, good friends. Its good to be back.

Great racing guys,
Hey Chris - we have found the Audi to be a bit heavy and tall - It does look cool!
Mike - Good looking Lola T-70 - I field a Lola in our Can Am class and it is very competitive
The 962 is a very competitive body in our GT1 class - good looking cars Joe and Max!

Looks like the field is quite competitive - cars bunched in the 7.0 second range

i have been holding back on racing my Tamiya bodied Lola T70, a 6.96 fast lap time car, which now won't make this podium! Oh well, good thing I race for fun! With this past race, you guys really stepped it up another notch with laps and lap times. And Mike is up to 194 laps at 7.0 range, great racing. So we are getting better every week- I like it. hope to make it for this weekend's next race.

Fellas,

What paint are you guys using that doesn't chip off the hard bodied cars ?

Thanks,

Hey Pete,

For the color laquer or acrylic work best.  Enamels are oil based and tend not to hold well.  After the paint and decals are done I use a 2K automotive clearcoat (the ones used at a body shop) to make it shine and gives a hard protective coating.  I clear most of the guys bodies at the tack.  Its visible in the pictures giving the shiny even finish.  Regardless of anything else, preparation is key.  Always scuff and clean with a wax and grease remover or soap and water followed by alcohol using a lint free rag.

I use testors lacquer spray straight from Michael's. I also clear coat all of my stuff after words. The clear helps to protect the color coats.
As to the Audi, it will work. The problems lied in a set of front wheels which did not want to roll and it bound up the car. I also need to get harder rubber as the car handled great for a few laps when the rear tires were still covered in lighter fluid. I am working 7.2 times, then back to the hops for it. Besides, what you all don't see is that the Audi has headlights.

Joey- looking forward to racing with you soon. I have tuned my Lola a bit so i'm comin' up your tail, don't slow down                                 1 :D

Fellas,

Thanks for the info on the paints, I'll try to get something going in the near future...I like the sports cars from the 1960's.

Does The RACE PLACE have all of the parts to build a car besides the body ???

Another great Hardbody race went down on Sunday.  Joe now the second driver to hit the 200 lap mark and the rest of the field was right at his heels.  A new fast lap of 6.80 was set as well.  Kurt ran his new McLaren that had some awesome decal work on it.  We have come a long way from slow laps and poor handling cars and I believe there is still more to go.

2  Tyler Donzella           Ford GP5

3  Glenn Orban             Red Lotus

4  Kurt Mansfield           McLaren

Great racing. Glenn, I see you are using brass side pans. Are they flush with the bottom of the center section of the chassis? Are they static? How thick are they - .062? some images if you can. Maybe not - it looks like others have not gone this route.
